Obituary

Walter Paul Dohrmann was born in 1927 to Adolph and Minna (Wenthe) Dohrmann in Brooklyn, NY and graduated from Aviation High School in New York City.  He was a member of the NY guard until he joined the U.S. Navy at age 18 and served as an Aviation Structural Mechanic.  Walter was proud to be a first generation American.

Walter graduated Magna Cum Laude from Wagner College in 1950.  He was passionate about history, eventually becoming certified as an Amateur Historian of WW I.  His studies focused on Aviation history.

Walter retired in 1989 from Amerian General Life Insurance as Vice President and Secretary.

Walter was an avid reader and always had a book with him.  He spent his retirement taking classes at LeMoyne College and traveling and faithfully cared for his wife, Florence until her passing in 2013.   Walter and Florence enjoyed and supported the Syracuse Opera company.  They also volunteered at Literacy Volunteers.

The family greatly appreciates the staff at Brookdale Long Branch Road and Iroquois Nursing home for caring for Walter in his struggle with dementia.

Walter was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Carl Dohrmann; his wife, Florence; and a grandson, David Fischer.

He is survived by his children, Diane Smithler, Walter Dohrmann Jr. and Amy Wade and her husband Cecil; grandchildren, Jennifer Geiger and her husband Rob, Matthew Fischer and his wife Brooke, Tom Wade and Peter Wade; great grandchildren, Katriel Pritts, Sydney Bleecker, Kylie Fischer, Brynn Fischer, Allyson Geiger, Lillian Geiger and Harrison Geiger. 

There will be no calling hours.  A memorial will be planned in the future. Burial was in White Chapel Memory Gardens.
