Rev. John D. Roock, 89, of Jamesville, passed away peacefully on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2020 at the Nottingham. Born in Syracuse, New York on October 13, 1931, he graduated from St. Vincent DePaul High School, Class of 1950. Father John completed his seminary studies at St. Jerome’s, St. Bernard’s and Christ the King. He became an ordained priest on May 23, 1959. His first assignment, he was an Associate Priest at St. Michael’s Church on Onondaga Hill and then went on to serve in the parishes of St. Mary’s Church in Baldwinsville, St. Joseph’s Church in Liverpool, Most Holy Rosary Church in Syracuse, St. Patrick’s Church in Taberg, St. Helena’s Church in Sherrill and his last assignment was Our Lady’s of Angel’s Church in Endwell. He retired on August 20, 2008.
He was predeceased by his parents, John and Helen (Leahy) Roock; and his brother and sister in law, Richard (Carol) Roock. Rev. John is survived by his nieces and nephews, Mary K. (Charles) Ward of Syracuse, Diane Roock of Fayetteville, Daniel (Kristen Fountain) Roock of Vermont, Edward (Cheryl) Roock of Florida, Sheila Roock of Syracuse and Jennifer (Wayne) Stevens of Baldwinsville; and several great nieces and nephews.
Father will lie in state in St. Matthew's Church, corner of Kinne Street and W. Yates Street, East Syracuse on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Vigil for a deceased Priest will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Matthew's Church, with Bishop Douglas J. Lucia as main celebrant. Interment will follow in Assumption Cemetery.
