John R. Gronau

June 27, 1948 ~ September 1, 2016 (age 68)
John "Jack" Richard Gronau, 68, accepted the hand of his Savior Jesus Christ on the sunny afternoon of Thursday, September 1st at his home with his loving wife and children by his side. Jack was born to John R. and Holly (Norris) Gronau in Syracuse, NY. on June 27th 1948. Jack grew up spending most of his childhood with his grandparents at Black Lake. He graduated from Phoenix High School where he was a competitive wrestler. He attended Sullivan County Community College earning his degree in Commercial Art. Jack enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam War to honorably serve his country. He fell in love with Denise (Frigon) and they were married on May 11, 1974. Jack retired from Chrysler New Process Gear after 30 years of dedication. He is survived by his loving wife Denise and his children Richard "Ric"Gronau, Maryanne (Bucky) Barber and Karianne (Adam) Davis. Jack was the proud grandfather of Emma, Maycee, Wyatt, Dawson, Makenzie and Garrett John Barber of Bellvue, CO. "Pa" will also be missed by his granddaughters Marina and Elliett Davis of Red Feather Lakes, CO. Jack enjoyed hunting, camping and canoeing and had a strong appreciation for music (Woodstock '69), art and photography. His paintings and drawings are treasures in the homes of those he loved. For many years he was dedicated to supporting his children's sporting events in DeRuyter. He was passionate for astronomy and history and was the self-declared "weather man" of Cuyler Hill for 25 years. Jack also loved his dogs Orion, Blue and Ripley. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, who remember him as a kind-hearted, loyal and hardworking family man. A celebration of Jack's life will be held on Wednesday, September 7th at The First United Church of East Syracuse 823 Franklin Park Dr. Calling hours will be held at the church from 2-5 pm. followed by a memorial service at 5 pm. Donations in memory of Jack can be made to CNY SPCA, Hospice of CNY or the Wounded Warrior Project.
