John D. Cowen

October 6, 1929 ~ September 15, 2017 (age 87)
John D. Cowen, 87, of East Syracuse, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph's Hospital after a brief illness.
John was born in East Syracuse on October 6, 1929, to Adam and Eleanor (Douglas) Cowen. He graduated from East Syracuse High School, where he played baseball. John was a proud graduate of Syracuse University, class of 1950. After a few years at Lamson Corp, John went to work for the NYS Department of Labor, as an unemployment tax auditor. After 40 years, he retired as the Senior UI Tax Auditor for the Syracuse division. John served as Treasurer for the Minoa United Methodist Church for many years. A believer in the value of education, he also served for 15 years on the East Syracuse Minoa Board of Education. John's hobbies included woodworking, hunting, fishing and growing a large vegetable garden. He was a sports fan, especially SU and the Yankees. Grandpa John was always there for his grandchildren, attending many school and sports events to show his loving support. He happily shared his time with us, and loved to tell the tales of the Old Days. He will be missed.
John was predeceased by his wife, Cora (Tedford) Cowen, as well as his sisters Nancy Schultz and Peggy Newton, and his son-in-law Charles Galuski.
Survived by his daughter, Linda Galuski of Kirkville, and son, John, Jr of East Syracuse; his sister, Jeanne Cowen, of East Syracuse; Grandchildren, Katherine (Todd Hess) Galuski of Chittenango, Michael, Robert and Charles Galuski of Kirkville, Greg (Katie) Galuski of East Syracuse and Adam Cowen of Syracuse; Great-grandchildren, John and Grace; and many nieces and nephews.
