William J. “Bill” Lewis, Jr., 76, of East Syracuse, passed away Monday, February 18, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, with his family by his side.
Born in Syracuse, he was a graduate of East Syracuse High School, Class of 1961 and Mohawk Valley Community College. He was a US Army veteran. For many years he was a draftsman designer for General Electric, Denton and O’Brien & Gere. Bill was a 58 year member of the East Syracuse Fire Department and was a member of E.A.V.E.S.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Patricia (Knowles) Lewis, the love of his life for over 53 years; two children, Laurie (Peter) Jasniok of Minoa and Michael (Trish) Lewis of Minoa; two grandchildren, Katherine and Matthew; his sister, Joan Ellen (Richard) McFee of Hawaii; in-laws, Tom and Mary Knowles of Rochester and Catherine Knowles of Maine; his uncle, Edward (Jeannine) David of Constantia; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, William J. Lewis, III; his parents, William and Ellen (David) Lewis; and his father and mother-in-law, Tom and Catherine (Papaianni) Knowles.
Bill was the pied piper to all children, dogs and other animals. He enjoyed traveling, wood carving, painting, photography, hunting and fishing at the camp in the Adirondacks, spending time in his back yard, his water garden, spending time with friends and family and researching the family tree.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 9 am at St. Matthew’s Church, East Syracuse. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, DeWitt. Calling hours are Thursday from 4-8 pm at Delaney, Greabell, Adydan Funeral Home, 241 Kinne Street, East Syracuse.
